The MRTC is developing several social service applications using low cost POTS (plain old telephone service) videoconferencing technologies. Social service applications of telemedicine technologies bring value to peoples’ lives in non-clinical, non-business ways. Social applications reach out to touch peoples’ hearts more than their minds. The MRTC is committed to pursuing appropriate applications of technology wherever technology can bring value to quality of life issues for patients. Examples of social service telemedicine (or videoconferencing) technology include hospice family visits, social visits between long term patients and their distant family members, tele-weddings and even tele-funerals. One of the MRTC’s most utilized social services applications is the Seeing is Believing (SIB) program.
